Challenge our mighty rivers
Durban has a number of rivers, like the uMngeni and Umkomaas, which offer exciting white water rafting, kayaking and canoeing experiences. The Shongweni, lnanda and Hazelmere dams also offer canoeing and fishing activities, with scenic bush lodges and self-catering bungalows for overnight visits.
Take a ride on an old steam train
For the laid-back adventurer there is a different form of excitement. The Umgeni Steam Railway offers a good old fashioned train outing on the last Sunday of every month from Kloof to lnchanga. The train winds through the Valley of 1000 Hills, with several fun stop-offs and spectacular views.
Scuba diving wonderland
Aliwal Shoal is Durban’s prime diving destination and attracts divers from around the world. Dive boats launch from the Umkomaas River, south of Amanzimtoti, to get to the reef which is about 4km long and lies some 5km offshore, with depths ranging from 5m to 35m. The reef runs almost parallel to the shoreline and Its many gullies, overhangs, caves and shelves are home to a vast array of marine life. Two wrecks lying near the shoal – the Produce and Nebo – provide divers with alternative underwater experiences.
Local dive operators provide equipment and accredited training, and will introduce you to the wonders that lie beneath the waves.
