BATTLEFIELDS ROUTE MUST DOS:
Fort Amiel was an important outpost, built in 1876 to secure Newcastle against possible attacks from the Zulus. This attractive historical complex overlooking the town houses a cultural/history museum. A cemetery dates to the Transvaal War of Independence. Open weekdays 10h00-16h00, Saturdays 10h00-13h00. Battle of Majuba site. From the Volksrust Road, take the Kwaggasnek turn- off. A short stretch of dirt takes you to the gates of the Commemorative Site. Tourism Newcastle will supply detailed maps. Expert guides can escort you and bring to life the stories of defeat and bravery. Hiking trails are perfect to explore this area.
Laing’s Nek Battlefield. Monuments and graves from the Transvaal War of Independence and the second Anglo-Boer War.
Schuinshoogte (Ingogo). Some 18km from Newcastle, this is the site of an unplanned attack on the British by the Boers that ended indecisively after a torrential downpour. The battle site includes a monument and a number of British graves.
The Armoury. Scott Street, Newcastle. The Newcastle Mounted Rifles built this arsenal in the 1870s. It is now used as a MOTH Shellhole.
Inkwelo Resort 32km from Newcastle situated on the slopes of the Inkwelo Mountains. Cosy rondavels, each with own bathroom. O Neil’s Cottage. During the Transvaal War of Independence of 1880-1881 the cottage, home of Eugene O Neil which lay in “no man’s” land and between the British and Burgher forces become a makeshift hospital for British soldiers after the defeat at Amajuba battle site and there are graves on the site.
