VERGE COMPETITION
The Verge Campaign is a project run by the Parks, Leisure and Cemeteries Department to encourage the citizens of eThekwini to take pride in their own environment and to foster civic pride in their own verges.
The competition requests that individuals, friends, garden clubs, individual companies, residents and schools use natural and exotic hard and soft landscaping in the beautification of the verges in front of their homes and/or businesses. The competition also includes a category for water-wise gardening based on sizes (i.e. small, medium and large verges).
Biodiversity conservation has become important to landscaping and horticulture and the competition has acknowledged this by making biodiversity 10% of the judging criteria. If a verge has a high percentage of diversity, it can help an entrant to win a prize. Thus the competition encourages residents to plant a diverse range of plants.
Members of NRD and competition judges visiting verges for their evaluation.
