INTRODUCTION Improving Lives and Livelihoods
THE DURBAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (DUT) is a globally recognised University based in KwaZulu-Natal. The University comprises five campuses in Durban and two campuses in Pietermaritzburg with a total of six faculties striving to transform the lives and livelihoods of over 33 000 students.
DUT is a result of the merger in 2002 of two prestigious technikons – ML Sultan and Technikon Natal – and was named the Durban Institute of Technology, later to become the Durban University of Technology, in line with all South African universities of technology. A member of the International Association of Universities, DUT is a multi- campus university of technology at the forefront of higher education, technological training, research and innovation.
DUT has six faculties: Accounting and Informatics, Applied Sciences, Arts and Design, Engineering and the Built Environment, Health Sciences and Management Sciences.
In alignment with DUT’s strategy, ENVISION2030, the University would like to see its staff and students become entrepreneurial and innovative. In 2020, DUT was ranked among the top 500 universities globally, 10th for citations globally and fifth nationally.
DUT’s ENVISION2030 (E2030) strategy adopts the concept of the DNA double-stranded structure as representing the core essence of what should characterise DUT and its people. The first DNA strand is people-centred and engaged and the second is innovative and entrepreneurial.
