 the Buffelsdraai Landfill Buffer Zone, with the primary aim of helping to offset some of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with Durban’s hosting of several 2010 FIFA World Cup matches.Areas demarcated for reforestation were either under sugar cane farming or infested with invasive alien plants. Historically, these areas would have comprised a mixture of forest, grasslands, woodlands, wetlands and riparian areas.
Nondumiso Khumalo, Senzo Mveni and Roxanne Munsamy of the Wildlands Conservation Trust, an implementing service provider for the Buffelsdraai Reforestation Project, hosted 25 youths from the Youth Empowerment Services (YES)
programme who participated in the tree-planting activity to commemorate WED 2019. The YES team, supported by 12 permanent project staff, dug holes in which a total of 635 trees were planted on management block 18.TheYES programme’s vision is to create a conducive environment and support youth development initiatives in order to improve the socio-economic status of young people.The 25 youths are part of a recycling project based at the Cato Manor Depot – Durban, and it was an exciting opportunity for them to participate in a different environmental initiative, thus broadening their knowledge base.
