The CAO was now a Section 21 Company. A new Board was elected with Mr S. (Mike) Naidoo (Registrar MUT) as Chairman. Other members of the newly constituted Board were: Dr Ann Knock (CEO); Ms Nomonde Mbadi (Executive Director: Corporate Affairs at Durban University of Technology); Mr Magnate Ntombela (Regional Director: UNISA); Mr Hendrick Pretorius (Deputy Director-Student Admin and Finance (UNISA)); and Mr Trevor Wills (Executive Dean of Students (UKZN)). The Company was registered on 26 January 2007 and the first Board Meeting was held on 13 April 2007.
Among the first challenges was the outstanding human resource matters left over from the period while the CAO was a project in esATI. Next was the matter of planning the long overdue IT and telephone systems.
The Call Centre handled all the operational processes of the CAO, with three categories of staff – capturers, checkers and general assistants. Everyone answered calls. The Call Centre Manager at the time was Ms Evelyn Watson, our current Operations Manager.
By mid-February 2007, all the packages for Schools Mailing had been mailed to 7 650 high schools, libraries and career centres, 335 more than 2006.
