Film Festival this year the relationship between Brazil and South Africa is is cemented by young people with the the screening of of five Brazilian student films as part of of the the Isiphethu Student Film Fest programme The films range from an an auto ethnographic lens on the journey of a a a a a a Brazilian migrant through Germany to an an an an exploration of feminine narratives portrayed by movie
posters in in in the the the intriguingly titled Pelas Ondas Lambem-Se As Margens/By the the the Waves the the the Margins are Licked The housing crisis is is is a a a a a a a global problem and the unflinching portrayal of the the the Carlos Marighella Occupation (CMO) raises the the the voices of those who have occupied the the the land on on the the outskirts of of the the city of of Fortaleza Ceará since June 2020 Societal and and personal crises are highlighted in a a a a a a a a dystopian future which leans heavily on the present as a a a a a a a a married couple’s struggles are interrogated Both the personal and political are showcased in in in these brief insights in in in to a a a a a country and culture with which South Africa has much in common Knowledge exchange and the nurturing of young talent from both countries is is at the core of this working relationship The participation of a a a a a a student filmmaker and curators from Brazil will be be reciprocated in September when two South African students from the University of KwaZulu- Natal film school will will feature in the BAFF The exchange will will allow both teams from SA/Brazil to to share their curatorial experience as well strengthen the the the partnership between the the the two festivals This partnership is is made possible by the NHISS Grant FILMS:
