Luthuli’s and Magaye’s need to guard against those culprits (mabawakhangele (“bawaqaphe”) lamankengane akwaLuthuli.
Oral narration further says that Ntuli/Mphemba – was an induna eyayakhe ngasechwebeni eThekwini ebheke isigodlo sakwaKhangelamankengana (protecting the royal kraal of Khangelamankengana).
(Inkengane yisigangi hence the name Khangelamankengane). Many Zulu people also referred to the white people as “amankengane” who came with nothing. The historical location of the Khangelamankengane Royal Kraal is said to be where King Edward Hospital is today located. (The British Colony settlers simply referred to that particular as “Congella” from Khangela).
Changing the name from e”Thwekweni” to e”Thekwini” or e”Sitheku”* to e”Thekwini” is attributed to the early white settlers’ inability to ensure proper pronunciations of these isiZulu words.
The name “Durban” itself comes from one of the British Colony army leaders, Sir Benjamin D’urban tasked to determine the land boundaries and demarcations (D’urban into Durban).
“Sometimes people hold a core belief that is very strong. When they are presented with evidence that works against that belief, the new evidence cannot be accepted. It would create a feeling that is extremely uncomfortable, called cognitive dissonance. And because it is so important to protect the core belief, they will rationalize, ignore and even deny anything that doesn’t fit in with the core belief”(Leon Festinger, 1957).
*(Some oral narration reference here are by Mntwana Nkosinathi Zulu waseNtembeni and Makhosi Mhlathuze Mhlongo of eSibhambeni, the Nandi family, Mthonjaneni near eMkhindini).
