The connection between people and the natural environment, especially the aquatic environment, is very often taken for granted. However, this connection has for many years influenced human physical and spiritual health. The connection between people and their natural landscape has also influenced where people choose to live. People prefer to settle in areas where
they can easily access water for their daily utilitarian use as well as for their spiritual and religious needs. These are basic human needs that should be included in sustainable development goals and be strictly protected by policies. (AOSIS. T.J. Mboweni, Engela P. de Crom 31 Oct. 2016)
Rivers differ from standing waters not only in their continuous motion but also in their longitudinal diversity; turbulent rocky stretches may alternate with quiet parts. By scouring the riverbed, they acquire mineral components, solids, or solutions, from a wide range of their basin.
