MIzibongo zaKwaZulu.
ost of these surnames and clan names are of the great Zulu chiefs (amakhosi). Street names after surnames such as Shezi, Mncube, Mqanduli, Sililo, Ntombela, Mntungwa (Khumalo, Mabaso, Mbulazi),
Mbatha (Shandu, Sontshikazi), Magwaza (Yengwayo, Njinji (Nje- nje) originate from Mhlongo/Langeni), Bhungane,(Radebe), Mzilikazi (Khumalo, Mabasa, Mntungwa), Ngcobo (Fuze, Qadi – the whole area of Kwa-Mashu to Mzinyathi belongs to amaQadi, logically Kwa-Mashu should be named eMaqadini), Khuluse (Chiliza, Shozi, Shozi, Ndwalane, Mdunge), Msomi (Nomndayi, Nyawose, Mangamahle, Gasa), Madlala (Hlokohloko, Sishi), Mkhwanazi (Ndonga), Mlangeni/Langeni (Mhlongo), Makhathini (Xulu, Gxabhashe), Msibi, Mangethe (Zwane), Ndlovu (Gatsheni, Mpongo), Dladla (Mgabadeli), Zulu (Mageba), Ntombela (Mahlobo), Shezi (Dlaba), Sigananda (Shezi), Mphemba (Ndlela), Madubane, Vilakazi (Gwala) (there is also Dr BW Vilakazi Primary School), etc. One must admit that many stories are told around these surnames and more often people even in the township
believe that they were named so because at some stage they were prominent surnames in those streets as people were resettled from eMkhumbane. There are also names associated with certain Zulu Royalty such as Mnyamana (of the Buthelezi), Zibhebhu (of Maphitha of Sojiyisa of Jama), Sitheku (Zulu), Somkhele, etc.
One of the world’s most famous and award-winning celebrity person from this area is Dr Thembi Mtshali-Jones who is recognized as one of South Africa’s most celebrated artists: as a singer, actress, and playwright (of S’gudi Snayis fame) and is also The Order of Ikhamanga awardee – which recognizes South African citizens who have excelled in the fields of arts, culture, literature, music, journalism and sport. The National Orders are the highest awards that South Africa, through the President, bestows on citizens and well-known foreign nationals, who have contributed towards the advancement of democracy and who have significantly impacted the lives of South Africans.
