While eThekwini Municipality has made progress in advancing these biodiversity goals, it still faces challenges, particularly due to urban development pressures. However, steady progress has been made, especially in expanding protected areas and fostering community- based conservation efforts. These actions contribute to GBF Target 1. Although the municipality is behind on some aspects of the GBF timeline, there are clear signs that it is moving in the right direction, particularly in its efforts to enhance the protection of critical biodiversity areas.
