INTRODUCTION
State of Biodiversity reporting brief
introduction:
The intention of State of Biodiversity reporting is to present qualitative and quantitative data and information that describe the status of biodiversity and ecosystem services in eThekwini Municipality, to highlight key threats and to record actions aimed at protecting and managing biodiversity. Furthermore, the report highlights some activities through stories that reflect action that has been implemented for biodiversity protection, management, restoration and research. These reports are produced annually, and this is eThekwini Municipality’s (EM) 16th State of Biodiversity Report. It collates data and stories relevant to the 2023/2024 municipal financial year1.
1: A municipal year starts on 1 July and ends on 30 June.
Cities play a key role in protecting biodiversity, in constructing green spaces and in improving health and wellbeing of its citizens. This is embodied in Target 12 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). In this sense, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat has recognized the valuable contribution from local and subnational governments.” -
