Iour last class was a free period. To most Seniors, this did not make sense,
for many of us were involved in afterschool activities or sports.
Juniors would complain that as Seniors, we had unstructured time. But
what was the point of it if there was no place to go? In the library, com­
munication was impossible. The guidance office did not have enough chairs
to accommodate students. Other areas were off limits. Of course, hallways
were always open to us, as long as we could find place to sit down. Better
yet, the stairs by the main door were seldom occupied. But who wanted to
study outside in the middle of the winter?
A number of Seniors had a day in their cycle in which their first class
was a free period. This was perfect for those who needed to complete last
night’s assignments. Not really. Wasn’t that the idea behind a half an hour
homeroom? It would have been more beneficial had we been allowed to come
late that one day, say, fifteen minutes before our actual first class. The majority
of us desperately needed the extra hour of sleep.
The idea of privileges had nothing to do with the belief that as Seniors,
we deserved them. Instead, they would have made a nerve-wracking year a
little bit easier. They would have given us something immediate to look forward
to, and made our last year more enjoyable.
