The education of a man is a nev­ er-ending process which starts the day he is born and stops only when his number is up. The CBA Senior is faced with the bitter-sweet reality of being at the top of the mountain — only to see a larger one in the distance. Yet hasn’t this been his experience since he first walked
into elementary school twelve years ago? In fact he is just begin­ ning to realize that, for the rest of his life, he will be facing plateaus with ever larger heights to scale just beyond them.
This plateau, called Senior year, offers the class of ’85 a moment to reflect on their past and gear up for their future. A CBA education — at least in part — has helped them to focus their attention on the real
world. The Presidential Election — which four years ago was of little importance to them — found most Seniors joining the national conser­ vative ascendancy in its support for Ronald Reagan. Interestingly enough, their concern about nucle­ ar proliferation was rated as high as their support for the Presidential incumbent. At the Senior Day of Recollection, Bishop Thomas Cos­ tello, a nuclear activist, conducted a healthy give-and-take with the class over this vital issue.
Nevertheless, of paramount con­ cern was their next plateau — what college to attend. College es­ says and SAT’s occupied center stage during the late fall and early winter, while many seniors ner­ vously awaited notification from the
“ right” school” in the spring. Ac­ ceptance of John Hoofnagle, Chris McLaughlin, and Rob Toole at Annapolis and West Point, respectively, served to heighten everyone’s concern about where they would be next Septem­ ber.
Everything wasn’t always grim, though. The breakup of the Who and Mike Roche’s stellar perfor­ mance as a vaguely disguised Ron­ ald McDonald at various athletic events managed to liven up their final year at CBA. All in all, the group got closer as the year wore on, so that by graduation night, it wasn’t so clear that everyone was all that happy to step off the CBA plateau.
