Hold the Presses
Newspaper is Back in Charge
Not the New York Times, not the Washington Post, not even the Herald Journal had the problems facing this year’s Purple and Gold staff.
Deadlines came and went and the
Editorial Staff struggled to bring to
gether quality and efficiency. Articles
that were well-written suffered at the
hands of one or two-finger typists.
The first deadline found copy ma-
bhines out of order as moderator Mr. I
Brendan Charlebois tried in vain to ^un off the paper. When the news of 'its delay was broken to the Editorial
Staff, Editor Tom Young, Assistant Editors Stuart LaRose and Keith Battaglia, Sports Editor Jim DeYulio, and Assistant Editor Lewis Kapeli kept up the faith of their reporters.
The paper was not a complete di saster. The staff pulled together to produce more editions of the paper with a new format and more pages. Notable changes included the new ad vice and trivia columns, a music page, and creative writing. The paper also began to computerize, with an eye to detail and neatness.
What does the student body think oftheP&G?SteveCookhadthisto say, “ A very original and sometimes provocative publication.” Erik Wes- terlund said that it “ captures all the romance and glitter of the ‘me genera tion’.” And anonymous said, “ Ithink it should have more student surveys and joke awards.”
In any event, not the New York Times, not the Washington Post, not even the Herald Journal is priced as cheap as the Purple & Gold. You get what you pay for.
