Injuries Prevent
Icemen From Strong Finish
Close but no cigar. The varsity Hock ey Team’s hopes for a winning season and a good showing in sectional play were strong at the beginning of the sea son, but a 6-8-1 mark in the regular sea son and a post-season defeat at the hands of Watertown was the way it turned out. Part of this can be attributed to numerous team injuries which plagued them from the outset of the season. An unfortunate loss of a key player came when Mike Bennett broke his wrist at a crucial point in the season.
The Brothers began the 1984-85 sea son with an easy disposal of non-league opponent U.N.D., in an 8-0 victory. In league action the Brothers succeeded in beating Fulton and Baldwinsville. Then they lost a hard fought game to number 7 ranked New Hartford by a margin of one goal. A 3-3 tie with defending state champs Rome Catholic showed the team’s real potential. The high-point of the season came when coach Mike Gagliardi celebrated his one hundredth win over Fulton (6-5) in sudden death over time.
The team’s sub-500 record was not a real indication of the kind of talent which the team possessed. Senior captains Cliff Merkling and Chris Garden, along with Junior Captain Travis Heiser, consistently came through in key game situations. Senior goalie Charlie Boyn ton, along with defender Rick Yockell, proved to be a force that had to be reck oned with. Other valuable players were Marty Cooke and Jeff Charles.
