NEIGHBOURS
Working together during emergencies
Disaster can strike quickly and without warning, sometimes isolating entire neighbourhoods. As recent events in Canada and around the world have reminded us, neighbours may need to rely on each other before help is able to arrive.
Working together – as a team – with your neighbours
before, during, and after a disaster not only increases your resources, it could help save time and lives.
BEFORE AN EMERGENCY
Getting to know your neighbours is an important part of preparing for an emergency. There may be people on your street, road,
or in your neighbourhood, who need more help than others
when an emergency happens:
• Older people living at home by themselves
• People with disabilities or special needs
• Families with young children
• Community members who don’t speak English fluently or use
modern communications equipment
• People newly arrived to the area
HELP EVERYONE PREPARE
• Make sure your neighbours know what a 72 hour kit is, and have one ready
• Talk to your neighbours about risk and how they can be better prepared
• Prepare a volunteer list, identifying neighbours who have special skills and trades – e,g, medical training, dual language skills, amateur radio (HAM) operator
• Note anyone having emergency equipment like a portable generator, snow blower, water pump, chainsaw, tools to turn off gas mains, bulldozer or tractor, 4 x 4 vehicle, snowmobile, all-terrain vehicle
• Plan how the neighbourhood could work together after a disaster or during an emergency
• Check in regularly with your neighbours to see if they are okay, and whether you can be of any assistance
• Keep informed by connecting to the radio, TV, or Internet
(if power is available) and follow any instructions given by
the emergency services or municipal, county or provincial officials.
