GEOFF DALE
Special to The Beacon Herald
Emmy-winning Stratford alumnus Eric McCormack and acclaimed playwright and theatre critic Richard Ouzounian join creative forces this fall for
The Fantasticks in Concert, their first professional collaboration in nearly three decades.
It was 1989 when Ouzounian – an associate director at the Festival for four seasons – directed McCormack as Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
McCormack was a member of the Festival’s acting com- pany from 1985 to 1989, appearing in 17 productions, in- cluding Measure for Measure, Much Ado About Nothing, All’s Well That Ends Well, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Henry V.
After his long theatrical history in Stratford, McCor- mack later garnered attention in the United States, star- ring in the title role of The Music Man in 2001 on Broad- way and opposite stage and screen stars like James Earl Jones and Angela Lansbury in the Tony-nominated The Best Man.
He gained international fame as lawyer Will Truman on NBC’s hit sitcom, Will and Grace, winning an Emmy
as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 2001. Currently starring in a successful reboot of the show, he is also the producer, director and star of the Netflix sci-fi series Travelers.
The Fantasticks has been a musical mainstay for 58 years, since its May 1960 opening at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in New York. However, Stratford’s concert ver- sion comes with an advisory on the Festival website that some original elements have changed to reflect today’s social sensitivity, most notably the presentation of Mor- timer as a musketeer, not an “Indian.”
