Among them, feeding on the audience’s reac- tions is paramount.
“We really depend on our audience and it be- comes an energy exchange,” she said.
“It is like a dance. The foundation of the play will always be there, but if there’s a particu-
lar night that there are more laughs and there
are fewer laughs, we adjust as actors onstage,
and that’s the fun and beauty of theatre, that it changes because of who is out there and how they are responding to us.
“You really want to be discovering and reacting truthfully at that moment, on whatever particu- lar night that is.”
Equally important is finding a rhythm and a voice that conveys the true meaning of each line, she added.
“An Ideal Husband is so rich and dense, and every line probably has three meanings, so as an actor you really have to know exactly what you are saying and what you are doing with every single line,” Yaraghi said. “You just have to be very precise and really specific about every single word you are using and what you are doing with
it.O” n a more personal note, Yaraghi said one of her goals is to shine a di erent light on her char- acter – one that she said really captivated her for her determination and bravery.
“She may be seen as the villain of the play because she’s the one that comes in and stirs up

trouble, but for me, I don’t see her that way at all. In fact, what I love about her is that she lives by the rules of the era, but she also lives by her own rules and doesn’t care at all what others think of her,” she said.
“This is a play set in 1895, so it’s quite profound for a woman to deny completely to conform to the traditional role of a wife or a woman, and to be power-hungry and independent and fear- less, and those are such powerful traits that she has that my challenge is to make her human and show that she’s not the villain of the piece.”
