Corrosion: Steel vs Ductile Iron

Ductile iron is expected to last 50 to 100 percent longer than weathering steel in
normal applications.

When DI is exposed to oxygen, it forms an oxide layer that protects the metal from
further corrosion. This concept is similar to how copper and aluminum conductor or
the statue of liberty behave. The green color of the Statue of Liberty is a patina that is
formed during oxidation, which protects the statue from further corrosion.
