SUMMARY NOTES FROM THE HOUSING CONFERENCE
KEY LEARNINGS DRAWN FROM THE HOUSING CONFERENCE
1. INTRODUCTION
The objective of the booklet is to provide a summary of the key discussions that occurred during the National Virtual Land and Housing Conference titled “Advancing Land and Housing Rights in South Africa: Theory & Practice”, that was hosted by the Legal Resources Centre (LRC) from 28th – 29th September 2020. This publication is made possible with the support of Comic Relief. The aim of the conference was to improve awareness and knowledge on land, housing, and evictions for both paralegals and candidate attorneys in South Africa. This booklet will provide communities, paralegals, and other legal professionals with valuable information to assist with asserting their rights through advocacy and lobbying and equip them with the necessary tools to use the law to protect and enforce their rights. The panellists and facilitators of the conference have affiliations to some of South Africa’s leading public interest organisations, being the Legal Resources Centre (LRC), Socio-economic Rights Institute (SERI), and the Centre for Allied Legal Studies (CALS). The booklet captures the key learnings drawn from the panellists’ experience in research, advocacy, and litigation in the fields of human rights and constitutional.
