the day, solar power will provide all of the hospital’s energy needs and produce additional energy for the Fort Irwin grid, saving approximately $700,000 annually. In addition, water-saving landscaping means the hospital grounds do not require irrigation.
“I am simply thrilled at the caliber of this facility,” said Maj. Gen. Thomas Tempel Jr., Commanding General of U.S. Army Regional Health Command—Central and Chief of the U.S. Army Dental Corps. “This team has labored enthusiastically to ensure the best possible health care environment for our patients, our providers, and our staff, and the fact is evident from the first step you take inside of that building.”
Both Abrams and Tempel applauded the years-long team effort and dedication that made the new hospital a reality. The push for the new facility began in earnest in 2009, when Abrams served as the Command- ing General of the National Training Center, and the groundbreaking occurred in May 2012. The construction project was managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District and completed by the Washington, D.C.-based Turner Construction Company.
“The facilities and staff here today represent an absolute team effort, one that balances the health care benefit that we provide to our soldiers, our families and our retirees, with the readiness that we must maintain of our medical force and those that we serve,” Tempel said. “As we cut the ribbon on this state-of-the-art facility today, we take another step toward this exciting evolution in Army medicine.”
Weed Army Community Hospital is led by the command team of Col. Martin Doperak and Command Sgt. Maj. The National Training Center and Fort Irwin are under the command of Brig. Gen. Jeffery Broadwater and Command Sgt. Maj. Robin Bolmer.
