From April 1966-April 1967, Sharon volunteered with the American Red Cross and served in South Vietnam as a recre- ation aide, also affectionately known as a “Donut Dollie.”

     Her job was to set up and run
recreation centers, and write
and present mobile recreation
programs (similar to quiz or
game shows) to the troops out
in the field, traveling by jeep,
truck or helicopter. In addi-
tion, she spent time visiting
hospitals, serving chow, greet-
ing newly arriving troops, and
generally spent a year smiling and letting “our guys” know that America cared about them.
“My year in Vietnam was the most amazing year of my life,” she said. “Every job since has paled in comparison. This experience was a once in a lifetime experience, and if asked to serve our country again, I’d say yes in a heartbeat.
“We are privileged and blessed to live in the USA. The job may have been exhausting and sometimes hard (and sad), but I got to see our guys at their best!”
