SCOTT, from 7
name in the history books for a stunt that would be the standard for many years, for many in the aviation world, and one who would inspire all the ca- dets who witnessed it firsthand!
The funny part about this was, when he shared the story over the years, he mentioned that Paul Mantz was paid $500 a minute for his aviation stunt work but Scott just received his military pay for another day at work. However, Mantz showed up a couple of days afterwards and gave Scott a brand new set of golf clubs! As Scott would say “That’s all right with me!”
General Scott finally got his oppor- tunity to go to war and he sure made the best of it, earning his name as a legend in the skies of China. Inspired by others, he wrote his most famous work, “God Is My Co-Pilot.” The book later became one of the great movies paying tributethe war years but was a huge disappointment to Scott, as the story line was rewritten to fit the narra-

tive of Hollywood (Gee, I guess things haven’t changed much, have they, I say with a smile!) Needless to say, the movie itself should have a column all its own. The airfields in Arizona be- came the last great home to an armada of war planes for the making of a mov- ie, and the life story of Scott should be high on the reading list of any fan of American heroes.
By the way, if you get a chance I highly recommend the movie Keep ‘Em Flying, which opens with a se- quence that was filmed over Pearblos- som here in the Antelope Valley. Now when you watch that incredible han- gar flight sequence in the movie, you will know how it came to be! Was the movie kind of corny? Yes it was, but what comedy with serious undertones wasn’t in the years of World War II? And of course that’s what made them special!
Until next time, Bob out ...
Gen. Robert L. Scott’s last military flight took place in the 1990s in a B-1 Bomber
as an observer. The general passed away in 2006 at the age 97.
