Command post controller good Samaritan at
Tucson car accident by Carolyn Herrick
943rd Rescue Group Public Affairs
Some people see a car accident and drive on by; but not Staff Sgt. Devin Smith, command post controller, and citizen Airman from Fort Worth who apparently has a knack for being in the wrong place at the right time.
Such was the case Jan. 19 when he was driving behind Aspen Ball- esteros, 16, who hit the gravel shoulder going 55 to 60 mph, over- corrected and flipped the truck she was driving – right in the middle of rush-hour traffic. Instead of driving by, Smith stopped to help.
“I stopped instinctively,” he said.
Having worked in law enforcement before, this wasn’t the first time he’s been on the scene of a wreck – it was actually the third or fourth time he responded to a rollover.
“I was right behind her, so I was the first to the truck,” Smith said. “I had her shut off the engine so nothing would continue to run, get hot or leak. She was disoriented but conscious. I looked through the back window of the truck to see if there was anyone else in there.”
Within a few minutes, several other good Samaritans stopped to help as well. One man who worked for a local cable company grabbed his fire extinguisher and put out a small grass fire that had started be- neath the vehicle.
“Thankfully, she wasn’t hurt, injured or bleeding,” Smith said.
The truck was resting on the passenger side so her door would have to open upward. One guy held it open and she braced herself to take off the seatbelt so she wouldn’t fall.
“We helped her climb out and sat her down away from the road- way to wait for EMS,” Smith said.
