FORT IRWIN, Calif. — Spouses who are new to the National Training Center and Fort Irwin got a good taste of all that the installation has to offer at the Newcomer Spouses Orientation on Sept. 1.
The event was held in the Samuel Adams Ballroom and gave spouses the opportunity to learn about programs and services within the Fort Irwin community geared toward wives, hus- bands and families. It was also an opportunity to meet other spouses and network with members of the community.
The event included briefings from Garrison departments, a guided bus tour of key locations on post and hand-outs with important information to keep handy during their stay at Fort Irwin.
Fort Irwin’s MWR plans to conduct the Newcomer Spouses Orientation quarterly and will release the date of the next scheduled event soon.
Participants can sign up with Family and MWR Special Events at 1317 Normandy Drive, or call 760-380-3776 for details.

AUSA Corner The Association of the U.S. Army Notes
1. The Army Family
The Army Family has been chosen as the 2020 recipient of the Associa-
tion of the U.S. Army’s highest award, the George Catlett Marshall Medal for
distinguished and selfless service. “While we can never truly do enough to recognize
all that Army families do to ensure America’s Army remains strong and ready, the Marshall
Medal is one way to publicly thank Army families who have been so important to the Army from the very beginning, through wars and conflict and continuing through today and into the future,” said retired Gen. Carter Ham, AUSA president and CEO. “This award recognizes their selfless service, which is especially well-deserved this year,” said Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy. “Army Families have faced these challenges with a resilience and determination that inspires us all. They epitomize the Marshall award’s criteria of selfless service to the nation under extraordinary circumstances,” said Chief of Staff Gen. James McConville. The 2020 award for The Army Family will be presented during the AUSA Annual Meeting and Exposition in October at a virtual event.
2. Reserve Priorities
Lt. Gen. Jody Daniels was sworn in July 28 as chief of the Army Reserve and commanding general of U.S. Army Reserve Command, making her the first woman to command an Army component. Daniels, who will lead the 200,000-strong Army Reserve, is “the right person for an extremely tough job at the right time,” Army Chief of Staff Gen. James Mc- Conville said.
3. AUSA Now
AUSA Now is the name of the virtual 2020 Annual Meeting of the Association of the U.S. Army. The Oct. 13-16 event will include several simultaneously streaming channels of programming, including the Army leadership addresses, professional forums and town hall meetings of the traditional in-person event.
Registration will be required to view the live programming or to look at the content once it is archived. For more details, check here: https://info.ausa.org/e/784783/annual-/42jjh/295148118?h=XN4jR7AFESswjb-g9p1ZkA-c6f- II6M6wB_26ksGuXM
4. Service Recommended
A Military Family Advisory Network survey found that despite the ups and downs, about 75% of respondents would recommend military life to friends and family. By comparison, just 46% of civilians would recommend the military to friends and family.
For those endorsing military life, the top reasons were a rewarding and stable career, the honor of military service, good pay and benefits, and the opportunities for personal growth.
