JUDGING CRITERIA
Quality of Material - 5 %, Workmanship - 60%, Showmanship - 25%, Variety of Material - 10%
GUIDELINES FOR MINERAL SPECIMEN DIVISION 4, 5 & 6
Note: Each mineral specimen shall have a label showing:
a. The name of the mineral specimen and the name of the variety of specimen if specimen is a variety.
b. The name of chemical classification (e.g. sulfide, carbonate, oxide, silicate, et. al,) or chemical formula.
c. The locality of the origin (if in US, list the name of the state or if in foreign countries, list the name of the country). The name
of all mineral specimen and varieties to be judged shall be in UPPER CASE (capital letters). When a specimen shows more than one mineral and not all to be judged, uses all lower case letters for the identified material not to be judged. The chemical classification may be in all UPPER CASE, all case letters or with the initial in the word capitalized.
DIVISION 4
BEGINNING MINERAL SPECIMENS - 50% new exhibit CLASS:
1. Mineral specimens any size or type, minimum of 10, maximum of 35.
2. Mineral family group or one element, minimum of 10, maximum of 35.
3. A Thumbnail mineral is defined as any mineral specimen displayed so that it will fit into a one inch cube, any type,
minimum of 20, maximum of 35. Minerals may be displayed either in or out of boxes.
4. A Cabinet specimen mineral is defined as any mineral specimen that will occupy a space greater than a volume of 48
cubic inches (example: 6in x 4in x 2in), min. of 5, maximum of 15. Mineral specimen, any type.
5. Fluorescent Mineral Specimens Any size, maximum specimen 35, minimum 20.
DIVISION 5
INTERMEDIATE MINERAL SPECIMENS - 50% new exhibit CLASS:
1. Mineral specimens any size or type, minimum of 10, maximum of 35.
2. Mineral family group or one element, minimum of 10, maximum of 35.

DIVISION 7
EARTH STUDIES (SCIENCE) - Must be 50% new exhibit CLASS:
1. Fossils
2. Mining Exhibit
3. Petrified Wood
4. Other, specify on entry form (i.e. shells, butterflies, insects, seed pods, etc.)
Fossils description: Specimens may be polished, unpolished or a protective coating may be applied. The specimens shall bear labels showing the common name of the fossil, time period and the locality of the origin by state or country, mini-mum of 10 pieces Mining Exhibit: Any facet of any kind of mining that produces specimens (Borate eggs, silver mining slag, etc.), mini-mum 15 pieces.
Petrified Wood description: Any polished form. Labels shall list the localities of State. Minimum of 10 pieces Other description: Labeling shall list scientific name, locality and date of collection (if known) for each specimen
