NTC & Fort Irwin Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention month
Fort Irwin celebrated Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention month (SAAPM) in April.
Since April is recognized nationally as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention month, supporting this theme demonstrates the sustained commitment to fostering an operational environment that promotes dig- nity, and respect, free from sexual violence. Celebrating Sexual Assault Awareness also aligns our efforts with those of our societal counterparts in public and private academic sectors, work sectors. The Teal colored Rib- bon is the universal symbol for Sexual Assault Awareness, and several leaders across all units could be seen wearing the teal ribbon mag- netic pins, showing their support for SAAPM.
This year featured a variety of activities, intended to develop prevention, training, education, and awareness. The first major event was our very 1st Annual SHARP summit; a two day, symposium featuring guest lecturers covering a range of subjects, focused on advocacy, and trauma informed services. The Summit was well attended, with approximately 100 participants, some of whom traveled from Los Angeles, and San Bernardino.
Additionally we hosted a “What Were You Wearing” event, (part of a nationwide movement). The event showcased clothing exhibit replicas of what real victims/survivors were wearing during sexual assault incidents, each exhibit had a victim statement describ- ing the scenarios surrounding the incident, and the impact it had on their lives. This event increase situational awareness for all who attended.
In addition to the main events, our Bri-
The Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) display located outside the Regiment’s Headquarters at Building 185, Avenue B, Fort Irwin, California, across the street from Wickam Park. The display will be available for the remainder of the month of April 2022 and serves as a starting point for Soldiers assigned to the National Training Center and Fort Irwin, to have conversations about sexual assault/sexual harassment and efforts of prevention. gades seized the opportunity to launch their own events to show commitment to the principles of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention. These events included the Teal Olympics, the SHARP Zumbathon, and sev- eral smaller unit inspired events like signing of Proclamations to Denim Day observances. Perhaps one of the biggest outcomes was the visible emphasis leaders placed on the fact that Sexual harassment and sexual assault are unacceptable and intolerable behaviors that erode unit cohesion, hurt our soldiers,
civilians and families and negatively impact our mission to serve and protect America.
Winning the fight against Sexual Assault and Sexual harassment, requires discipline, dedication, trust, and willpower. SHARP professionals are always available when their assistance is requested. Sexual Assault Aware- ness doesn’t just stop after April 30th, it goes on year around. We are constantly work- ing and the SHARP-Fusion Directorate is continuously planning events, coordinating services, conducting training, and supporting the installation. Lead-Train- Win!
able to them period, so ... it’s super important for us to keep up with resources on post.”
Resources available at the Baby Expo included departments from within the hospital such as Women’s Health Clinic, Mother Baby Unit, anesthesia, pharmacy, and nutrition care, entities from the Fort Irwin community, and a representative from a hospital in the area where newborns can be sent if they require a higher level of care.
Representatives from each resource set up a table with informa- tion and personnel available to answer questions.
Staff from the Mother Baby Unit also offered tours of the department and the birthing suites.
“There’s a lot of anxiety wrapped around what people think military hospitals provide and so we are very fortunate at Fort Irwin to have such an amazing hospital,” Manges said. “Our facilities are very top-notch and our rooms are beautiful and well laid out to try to give them the most homeopathic environment and the delivery that they’re looking for.”
Barbie, who is 32 weeks pregnant, and Luis toured the labor and delivery suites and had the opportunity to ask questions to

the staff, which was helpful, Barbie said.
“Being able to ask how long they keep you and when does the
timer actually start was very nice,” she said. “It was also nice seeing how spacious [the room] was and how comfortable it looks for my husband as far as sleeping and everything.”
The security of the Mother Baby Unit made the Aguilars feel more comfortable as well, Luis said.
“I thought it was nice that they put a tag on the baby, so [the baby is] tracked everywhere in the hospital ...it feels really secure,” Luis said. “If the baby for some reason has to leave the room, you’re invited to come with them and be there with the baby 24/7, so for me that was awesome just hearing that.”
More than 100 people attended the Baby Expo, including Luis and Barbie who walked away with information and a better understanding of what to expect from their birthing experience at Weed ACH.
“That was my main concern, just her being okay with every- thing and it sounds like she’s very happy,” Luis said, reiterating the peace of mind that came from attending the event. “That’s what we were looking for and we have it.”
