April is Alcohol Awareness Month
Think, rethink before you drink
The state of Arizona has a strict zero- tolerance policy on drinking and driving. Although the legal limit is a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08, or about 2 standard- size drinks in an hour, a person can be charged for driving under the influence if you are pulled over for any reason and have any alcohol in your system. There are three categories of DUIs:
Standard DUi: 0.01-0.14
Jail: 10-90 days.
Fines: $1,250-3,000, plus jail costs and $80 monitoring fee.
Screening and counseling required: Yes.
Driver’s license suspension: 90-day sus- pension or one-year revocation.
Interlock device on vehicle: 12 months.
Extreme DUi: 0.15+
Jail: 30-120 days; home detention eli- gible (after two days).
Fines: $2,500-3,250, plus jail/home
detention costs and $80 monitoring fee. Screening and counseling required: Yes. Driver’s license suspension: One-year
revocation.
Interlock device on vehicle: 12 months.
Aggravated Extreme DUi: 0.20+
Jail: Two years in prison.
Fines: $3,240, plus jail/home detention costs and $80 monitoring fee.
Screening and counseling required: Yes.
Driver’s license suspension: One-year revocation.
Interlock device on vehicle: 18 months.
In May 2018, a 28-year-old Phoenix Valley man was arrested after driving northbound on El Mirage Road near Maryvale Drive. Reportedly he was in- toxicated, claiming he had two drinks of whiskey, and was under the influence of Oxycodone. His BAC level was registered
at .119. He was charged with manslaugh- ter and held without bond due to striking a pedestrian who was pronounced dead. Two weeks prior, his driver’s license had been suspended due to being arrested for an extreme DUI with a minor in the car. His decision to drive under the influence changed his life and the lives of many others forever.
Most people who drink and drive incor- rectly believe they are not severely im- paired. Alcohol intoxication has impaired their thinking and their driving. Alcohol is a depressant that affects the central nervous system. Initially, it produces pleasant feelings and relaxation. As you continue to consume alcohol without allowing your body time to metabolize each drink (which takes 1.5 - 2 hours per drink) your BAC will quickly increase. As your BAC increases, the positive effects of alcohol decrease, and the negative con-
sequences increase, including: Impaired judgement, slurred speech, distorted vision and hearing, drowsiness and incoherence.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2017, 10,874 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for 29 per- cent of all traffic-related deaths in the United States. These deaths may have been prevented if these drivers made a plan to get home safely. Think about the costs of drinking and driving before you get behind the wheel. Spending $30 on a ride-sharing service or taxi is much cheaper than court fees and fines.
