Final basing decision for Special Operations Wing to Davis-Monthan AFB, revisions to maximize effectiveness
Air Force News
The Department of the Air Force has selected Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., as the new location for the 492nd Special Operations Wing.
Originally announced in August 2023, the plan to establish the 492nd SOW at Davis-Monthan AFB has been refined to prioritize mission effectiveness, cost
efficiency and alignment with Air Force and Department of War priorities.
Following the required environmental analysis, these previously announced units will relocate to Davis-Monthan AFB:
• Headquarters, 492nd Special Opera- tions Wing at Hurlburt Field, Fla.
• 492nd Special Operations Theater Air
Operations Squadron at Duke Field, Fla. • 319th Special Operations Squadron
at Hurlburt Field, Fla.
• Air Combat Command Intelligence
Squadron, new activation
Additionally, as part of a refined plan,
Davis-Monthan AFB is identified as the preferred location for the following units as part of the 492nd SOW:
• 34th Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt Field, Fla.
• 20th Special Operations Squadron and 20th Special Operations Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M.
The Air Force will begin the required environmental analysis on proposed changes beginning fall 2025.

Early results, lessons learned
The 711th HPW collected data on operator performance, workload, and teaming dy- namics. Findings confirmed
that AI can accelerate deci- sion-making while keeping humans at the center of the process.
“Collaboration with AFRL, the ABMS program office, and industry allowed us to rap-
idly experiment, refine require- ments, and accelerate the path from concept to capability de- livery,” said Ohlund.
Shaping the future of C2
The DASH series is a key
step in modernizing Air Force command and control. By com- bining human judgment with AI, the service is preparing operators to make faster, more informed decisions in future contested environments.
“DASH 2 proved human- machine teaming is no longer theoretical,” said Zall. “By fusing operator judgment with AI speed, the Air Force is shaping the future of decision advantage in joint and coalition operations.”

the inventory, combat collaborative aircraft, T-7, KC-46, F-35, F-22 — is a testament to the pedigree of this wing and the quality of work that we do,”
said Col. Tom Tauer, 412th Test Wing commander, during a wing-wide com- manders call held within an hour of the B-21’s arrival.
Developed in partnership with Northrop Grumman under the over-
sight of the Air Force Rapid Capa- bilities Office, the Raider is designed to deliver both conventional and nu- clear payloads. At Edwards, the 420th Flight Test Squadron executes B-21 ground and flight testing while low-
rate initial production continues from Northrop Grumman’s facility at Plant 42. Northrop Grumman is on contract to produce a minimum of 100 B-21s that will incrementally replace the B-1 Lancer and B-2 Spirit.
