just because his mom is a chief.”
Jonathan Dietz recalls the reactions of his fel-
low Airmen after initially enlisting.
“It’s interesting having my Mom work in the
same unit and they picked on me sometimes,” he said.
Despite the banter, he forged his own path and is now deployed maintaining aircraft readiness for tactical airlift missions.
With a demanding work environment, in- creased on-duty hours, and higher stress, a de- ployment offers more experience compared to the day-to-day home station missions. Moreau said with pride, “I think he’s going to come back with so much growth. He’s going to come back even better than where he is now. It’s great to de- ploy these younger Airmen because they come back ready for leadership and ready to become an NCO.”
Susan Dietz attended the departure of her son with more than 100 other members of the 145th AW. She hugged him on the flightline just before he boarded a C-130 to his deployed location.
“From a mom’s perspective, you’re always wor- ried,” Susan Dietz said. “That’s my baby boy; he’s my youngest, so it’s a little scary to see him de- ploy, but he’ll be all right because he’s going with a great group of guys.”

eign Wars.
This is that thing about veterans
and passage of time. Now, the high “middle age” veterans are, like, Des- ert Storm vets. The new national security adviser, Lt. Gen. H.R. Mc- Masters, is now considered senior Army leadership, and he is 54. Mil- lions of Vietnam War era veterans are 20 years older than the general.
My friend and fellow veteran clinician is Gerry Rice, MFT. Rice is a marriage and family therapist who pulled his time as grunt infan- try and scout dog handler, and has a clinical practice to treat veterans with PTSD.
“To these young troops now, we aren’t the World War II guys,” Rice said. “Our war is so long ago that we are the Doughboys!”
And that is how the torch passes. The Doughboys are all gone now. And the Vietnam War generation of troops: We are the Doughboys.
The “War to End War” did not do that. But it did prepare the ground for time to come, that gen- erations of veterans would have to care about, and sometimes provide care for generations of veterans to come. That is what happens because it appears to be there will be no end to war any time soon in the human experience.
Senior Airman Iiae Hess, 355th Operations Support Squadron air traffic controller, moni- tors air traffic at D-M. Hess plays a vital role in D-M’s daily operations by safely and ef- ficiently managing the flow of aircraft through all aspects of flight.
Hess has also been recognized for her strong work ethic in her personal life.
“If she can help somebody, she’s going to whether they ask her to or not,” said Tara Dorough, Hess’ close friend. “She just does things because she wants to help people and make an impact.”
Hess has proven time and again she possesses the qualities out- lined in the whole airman concept; for that she is being recognized by some of the Air Force’s highest leadership.
“It was a surprise when I was told I was put up for (the award) and really shocking when I kept moving on and kept winning,” Hess said. “I’m very grateful for my leadership and everyone who has helped push me this far.”
