Bobcats Behaving Badly: Safety Tips Fort Irwin Natural Resources Department
News
The Natural Resources department has been tracking the “Bobcats Behaving Badly” scenarios, including the Oct. 26 weekend occurrence. The department says it can take steps to assist the public with these feline individuals who are posing a danger to small pets on the garrison but the workers need residents’ help to do it. They ask that if a resident has personally experienced a run-in with a bobcat, to please contact the Natural Resources Department directly. In order to effectively attempt trapping the animal(s), some very specific information is needed. Workers say third-party or hearsay/rumor information won’t be helpful.
If a resident’s pet has an encounter with a wild cat that results in injury, please report to Vet- erinary Services. It is critical for workers to understand the timing, location and circumstances of the encounter, so workers can orchestrate an effective capture strategy. Any bobcats success- fully captured during this process will be evaluated for health condition and age, and a safe, appropriate re-location plan will be developed. According to the department, these wild animals are attracted to garrison because of the draw of our area: water, vegetation, and refuse/garbage attracts the prey animals the predators rely on-- they are just following their food source. The department only intervenes if a wild critter becomes a danger to the public or itself. The depart- ment thanks residents for their patience and understanding and asks that everyone continues to send the (accurate) information, along with any questions or concerns!
The Natural Resources Department is setting traps in the area of recent, repeated sightings and encounters with the latest bobcat who is not behaving as a normal, healthy adult bobcat should.
The department asks that residents all use caution when using the walking trails along the large wash west of Commander’s Loop area. The department asks that everyone reference the map and attempt to avoid this wash until it captures this animal. Please contact the Environmental Natural Resource Department if you spot are encounter the animal.

Hundreds lined Main Street in Barstow for the 86th annual Kiwanis Mardi Gras parade.
The event was held the last weekend of October and is modeled after the famous New Orleans Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras celebrations, held annually in February/March. Historically, the event brings out more than 5,000 spectators to see more than 70 participants floats, cars, marching bands and military- style vehicles and tanks.
Law enforcement, public safety officials and military officials were all represented in the parade, including Fort Irwin’s Commanding General Jeff Broadwater, Command Sgt. Maj. Matthew Lowe, Garrison Commander, Col. Seth Krummich and Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Edwards.
