FORT IRWIN, Calif. — Gen. Mark A. Milley, 39th chief of staff of the Army, visited the National Training Center here and observed current cyber tactics, techniques and strategies in a realistic operational environment that simulates the conditions on today’s battlefield, May 9.
Milley received a cyber briefing from U.S. Army Soldiers with the 780th Military Intelligence Brigade and was given a firsthand look at devices that can manipulate, disrupt, and degrade the enemy’s ability to operate through cyberspace.
During this rotation, these unique capabilities were put to the test in the 1,200 sq. mi. of training area that makes up the National Training Center.
“We know that our potential adversaries may attempt to leverage social media, hacking, phishing, etc., against our forces across a range of missions,” said Brig. Gen. Jeff Broadwater, Commanding General of the National Training Center “Therefore, Integrating this technology and domain into our complex training scenarios keeps us relevant and adds realism, as we prepare Soldiers for tomorrow’s challenges.”
After the cyber demonstration, Milley made a stop at both tac- tical operation centers of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team and 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment, where Milley met with Soldiers and gave challenge coins. When Milley arrived, Soldiers were in the midst of conducted a combined arms rehearsal, prepping for live fire operations the following evening.
“Readiness is our number one priority,” said Milley. “Complex training like a battalion-level live fire at NTC is critical to current readiness, as well as training leaders who will one day train the future force.”
