 Chaplain’s thoughts ...
   What helps you recharge?
By Chaplain (Maj.) Benjamin D. Butcher
56th Fighter Wing
Recently, as I visited our units here in Thunderbolt Country, I asked the question, “What are some things that help you to recharge?”
The answers included: going camping, working out, traveling, going on a cruise, hanging out with friends, shopping, listening to music, sleeping in, spending time with my family, playing video games, practicing martial arts, and spending time with God. The list went on and on...
Of course, too much of a good thing can sometimes be a bad thing. For this reason, the Air Force embraces a broader approach to fitness that focuses on the Mental, Physical, Social, and Spiritual parts of our lives. You may notice some of these elements in the answers that people shared with me.
It is important that we reflect on and do the things that help keep us strong and provide a sense of purpose. If we are not intentional about taking time to do these things, we may find ourselves struggling or weary. What is something that helps you to recharge your batteries?
The things that give you strength and meaning are called Protective Factors, because they help protect your well- being. As a person of faith, I feel a sense of purpose and well-being, when I read scripture, pray, or worship. I have also found that spending time in nature can be refreshing. Are you spending time on activities that make you happy or peaceful?
Protective factors also include those things that give us a sense of connectedness. These may include trusting relationships, community involvement, and support groups. For those of faith, many of these are available at a chapel or local church. For others, it includes spending time with those with similar interests or values. Positive relationships can be a great source of strength. Are you spending enough time connecting with others?
We are all faced with situations, responsibilities, and obligations that require our attention, effort, and energy. Add some unexpected challenges to these, and it is easy to feel overwhelmed. It is during these times that the protec- tive factors we have in our lives help us to remain resilient. We are able to overcome obstacles, maintain a sense of

meaning, and become stronger than we thought possible. My prayer for you this month is that you find time to do the things that bring you peace and purpose and that your relationships help you to feel connected. The chap- lains are available for you; let us know how we can help.
