COLONIAL LIVING ROOM WINDOW we watch the two
men come inside the baronial room, trophy deer heads on
the wall. Arthur sets his drink down, turns to the Speaker,
and says something. The Speaker immediately reacts,
shaking his head. "No. Impossible." We can almost read
his lips. But Arthur apparently says "The Deed is Done."
Arthur places his arm on the Speaker's shoulder. Then
their eyes meet. Speaker Manning blinks
WE CAN SEE that a deal has been established. Something
portentous. Almost like a schoolboy, Speaker Manning
sits on the edge of the great Morris chair.
ROCKLAND AIR FORCE BASE KITCHEN NIGHT
Young Airman Morrison is peering intently into the
refrigerator window.
MORRISON'S POINT OF VIEW: Through the frosted
window, General Yeager is marching back and forth.
AIR BASE REFRIGERATED ROOM - NIGHT
It is a strange but hardly comforting ritual. Now the
General salutes again, but with his left hand.
BASE KITCHEN - NIGHT
Standing back from the window in the refrigeration room,
the impressed Airman starts to salute just like the
General using his left arm instead of his right arm. He
still can't figure something out.
Finally overcome with curiosity, Morrison steps closer to
the window in the refrigerator door.
