Friday September 22 - The precious blood of Christ
“The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you... Exodus 12:13
Why is Jesus’ blood so uniquely precious? As Christians we are saved by his blood, on the ‘doorposts’ of our lives, from the punishment our sin deserves – mercifully ‘passed over’ by a merciful God. The ‘sprinkling’ of Christ’s blood represents the covering of his love. It washes away our sin, clears our conscience, forgives and frees, makes us acceptable and brings us near to God, gives peace and guarantees eternal life.
Nothing has ever existed, or ever will, that is as powerful, perfect and valuable as the blood of the Lord Jesus, poured out as he suffered on the cross. Imagine the immense wealth of this world, the beautiful accomplishments of human beings through the ages, indeed the glory and richness of God’s creation itself! The Bible says these all pale into insignificance compared with the precious blood of Christ. As we have seen, blood represents life, and laying down his life, and rising again, our Redeemer overcame death, sin and the devil. In his first letter Peter explained: ‘...it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect’ (1 Peter 1:18-19).
Our heavenly King is worshipped in heaven by saints of all ages who have trusted in his most precious blood!
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for sacrificing your life and shedding your blood that we might live. Amen.
Saturday September 23 - Celebrate forever!
“This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord – a lasting ordinance.” Exodus 12:14
God ordained that this simple meal eaten in travelling clothes, standing in night’s shadow, would be commemorated forever. So throughout the centuries both Passover and the Lord’s Supper or Holy Communion have been celebrated to preserve God’s message of redemption through all generations.
At the Last Supper, before he died, Jesus said, “I will not drink the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom” (Matthew 26:29). What will it be like when he comes in power and authority to right all wrongs and take his beloved ones to reign with him forever in the new heavens and new earth?
CH Spurgeon, preaching on ‘The Marriage Supper of the Lamb’ in Revelation, marvelled: ‘John writes constantly about the Lamb... even in his highest glory, he still wishes us to regard him as the sacrifice for sin... slain from before the foundation of the world. This he never lays aside... the gentle, suffering, sacrificial Victim, dying that we may not die, presenting himself a sacrifice acceptable unto God. It is as the Lamb that he has most fully displayed his love to his Church, to which he is to be married on that last momentous day.’
The blood of Christ has brought us out from death to eternal life, to be his beloved, perfect Bride, the Church! We will worship and reign with him forever!
Oh Jesus, how precious is your blood to me. I trust in its life-giving power. Amen.
