THIS WEEK’S BIBLE INSIGHTS ARE BY:

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO READ MORE ON THIS WEEK’S MAJOR THEME:
Jeremiah 7:1-11, Matthew 6:5-15, Acts 3:1-10
1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no-one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”
them to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” 10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5 some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6 They answered as Jesus had told
11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.
Sunday July 20 - A horse for the Kingdom
“...you will find a colt tied there, which no-one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.” Mark 11:2
Earlier this year, my attempts to get to church ended at the bottom of my road, when my car skidded to a stop in snow and ice and refused to go any further. The rest of the morning was spent shovelling! A donkey would have been of more use. Snow was not a factor for Jesus as he prepared to enter Jerusalem, but the choice of transport was still important.
At first sight, you might think that Jesus is telling his disciples to steal a donkey – or at least to borrow it temporarily. But I wonder... I think Jesus had already prepared for his entry into Jerusalem. He knew that the young donkey was going to be tied up in a certain place, and he may well have already arranged with the owner for its use.
Jesus is choosing his ride deliberately in order to fulfil the prophecy of Zechariah (Zechariah 9:9) that Israel’s true king would enter Jerusalem not on a grand warhorse but on the foal of a donkey. From the moment he enters Jerusalem, Jesus is in full control of events. To his disciples and the crowds, it may appear that things are not going as expected, but Jesus knows he is destined for the cross. So, if your life does not seem to be going to plan, be assured that God is still in control!
Lord Jesus, thank you that my life is in your hands, even when the future seems uncertain to me. Amen.
