Wednesday October 9 - Jesus without parallel
Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth
oftheplunder! Hebrews7:4
The letter to the Hebrews is addressed to scattered and persecuted Jewish believers, struggling against an onslaught from the world and the devil. These dear souls were finding life extremely difficult. The writer seeks to encourage them, instilling faith by lifting up Jesus, declaring him to be their great High Priest. Jesus was far more than an itinerant rabbi or prophet; he was the fulfilment of the old covenant, the fulfilment of the law and prophets (Matthew 5:17).
To the Jews, Abraham was their founding father, he received the covenant promise of land (Canaan) and the promise that his seed would become a great nation, bringing salvation and hope to the world. In this Abraham would be blessed, along with the nations who blessed Israel. In tithing to Melchizedek, a priest of lesser standing than Jesus, Abraham humbles himself. This in turn elevates Jesus as one far greater than Abraham.
Take time to lift your eyes, from the trials of life and fix them on Jesus. Allow the Holy Spirit to reveal his greatness, a greatness greater than Abraham, Moses, David ...... Let’s take the opportunity to put Jesus in his rightful place: our High Priest and King, our Lord and our Saviour, unreservedly giving him permission to reign and rule in our lives.
Almighty God, Please take the highest place in my life, be my priest and my Lord. I yield to you and ask you to rule and reign in my life for your glory. Amen.
Thursday October 10 - Advocate above all others
One who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. Hebrews 7:16
Aaron, Moses’ brother, the leader of the tribe of Levi, was appointed as High Priest. Subsequent High Priests, and for that matter everyone with a priestly function, had to be a Levite by birth. It remained that way for over 1,500 years, but now the old had passed away, Jesus had ushered in a new covenant, not based on human achievement (keeping the law) but one based on the finished work of Christ on the cross. This new wine needed a new skin!
The function of earthly priests, offering sacrifices to God on behalf of the people, had been rendered redundant by the once for all time sacrifice of Jesus at Calvary. Are you aware at this very moment Jesus is representing you as your advocate before the judge of all, Almighty God? If you have acknowledged your sin and repented, past sins will not be held against you. Why? because the just penalty has been paid in full by none other than your advocate, Jesus! This is amazing grace!
But Jesus was not a Levite; then how can he be your High Priest? The answer is simple – in order for your advocate to represent you he must be alive, beyond reproach and in full possession of the facts. Jesus, and Jesus alone fulfils this role. Hallelujah!
Father, I thank you that the one who saved me is the one who represents me before your throne of grace and mercy. Thank you for the price Jesus paid. Amen.
