or seen in me – put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
Sunday February 4 - Food for thought Finally, brothers and sisters... Philippians 4:8
At the beginning of this chapter, Paul speaks about ‘standing firm in the Lord’ (v 1) and now in these verses, he says ‘finally’ or ‘listen up’ or ‘pay attention’... this is important! And he begins to show us how we can ‘walk the walk’ with our God of peace, in his peace. How? By feasting on the mental diet Paul spreads before us!
Someone once said, “A guarded thought life has to be accompanied by a guided thought life.” God will guard, as well as guide our thoughts, as we trust him. How can we enable that to happen? Simply in the ways we choose to think. It sounds so easy, and yet already your minds will have shot off in all directions as you’ve read these words! Distractions will have come... other thoughts or ideas... or even about what you will be doing when you have finished reading this!
If we can do as Paul asks us to do in these verses then I am convinced that the peace of God really will guard our often troubled minds and guide us in the way he would have us go. The word ‘finally’ also feels like an invitation to stop... to consider...
Would you do that with me this week as we read and ‘feast’ on just two verses together? Food for thought indeed!
Father God, thank you for your Word to us. It really is ‘food’ for our hungry souls. Amen.
