MFL Debating Competition
Ten of our Sixth Form linguists put their debating skills to the test in a competition featuring eight schools for those using a second or third language. Charles Izzard and Jasper Penrice achieved a creditable third place in the German section and Francesco and Alessandro Coppola won the Spanish competition, quoting Aristotle to good effect in their argument against mankind being inherently evil.
The Oscar Foundation
Earlier in the term, we had a visit from a group of girl footballers from the poorer parts of Mumbai. They came to us under the auspices of the OSCAR Foundation which has given them a new outlook on
the world. Several of our pupils (Beatriz Cunningham, Ariana Davison, Millie Cox, Amber Anderson, Brenda Asein and Jasmine Jain) set about securing meaningful financial support for them through our school community and raised the magnificent sum of £10,647 as a very significant contribution to the ongoing well-being of the girls.
Sporting Snippets Girls’ Hockey
Our Girls’ Hockey players continue to ride the crest of a wave: Hannah Atkinson and Jess Biddle have been selected to register on the Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Sporting Excellence by England Hockey which is a signal that they are considered to have the potential to reach the very highest levels in the game and our Under 18 team progressed to the third round of the England Hockey Cup with a 5-0 win over Clifton. Our Under 16 girls have gone through to the National Finals of the Indoor Championships in January and our top teams won all of their matches at the weekend against Wycliffe, the 1st XI winning 4-1. There are six national players in the various age groups, the most recent selection being Vicky Monllor-Bessio for the Spanish U14s!
Rugby
Our Rugby players faced St Edward’s, Oxford, in their penultimate match of the season and performed creditably. At 1st XV level, we have tended to lack the fire power of other teams and their speed and agility, but have worked tremendously hard and there have been some special moments over the past months. Teddies beat us 36-5 in the top game whilst at U14A level we won 45-0. The U14A team deserve special congratulations on winning eight out of ten of their fixtures.
Golf
Izzy Lloyd competed in the Junior European Open Golf Championships in Spain over a week and it was an amazing achievement for her to come 11th in a field drawn from the very best young female golfers in Europe. Congratulations, Izzy!
