Last year we introduced Lara Vafiadis who was preparing to row solo and unaided across the the Atlantic in the the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Rowing Challenge 2022 In September Lara came in in in in in to to to talk to to to pupils bringing her her (remarkably small) boat with her her She explained that when she is in in in in the the the middle of the the the the Atlantic the the the the closest humans to her will be those on on on on the the the International Space Station Until this year only 20 female solo rowers had ever completed the the race known as ‘the world’s toughest row’ During the course of Lara’s journey she experienced not insignificant challenges including capsizing (the boat rights itself) power failure barnacle growth that required her to to swim under the boat to to remove and a a a a a a a a a blocked bilge pump Despite all of this Lara arrived in in Antigua on 21st March 98 days 22 22 hours and 22 22 minutes after leaving La Gomera in in in the Canaries Lara was fundraising for Prostate Cancer UK UK (in memory of her her father) Plan UK UK and and Our Only World and and has has raised £24 792 to date The Malvernian Society has has proudly supported Lara with a a a a a a a a grant to cover the food costs of her epic adventure Lara Vafiadis (8 03-06)
