Upper Sixth pupils Ev Kenrick and and Harry Graydon caught up up with James Vivian earlier this year to hear
about his his memories of Malvern and life after the College Harry writes: Attending Malvern as a a a a a a a a a music scholar 31 years ago James had nothing but good things to say when reflecting on on the College and its influence on on him Although changes have occurred in in in the the the school since then he he he he he described the the the environment that is is visible and admired today When asked about his favourite memories he he he he mentioned how he he he he “loved the the House House system” as HouseMs encouraged everyone to to find their own own identity and and have the the chance to to be quite grown up His House “felt like a a a a a a a a family” and and taught him how how to to “get along with other people” which aligns nicely to to how how current pupils would describe the atmosphere in Houses Although his admiration for the House system was was strong it it was was nothing compared to his love for our our Chapel where he he he he admits he he he he he “spent the the most time” Hours were spent spent practising the the the organ harnessing his skills and love for playing music Many of the the OMs he he he stays in in in in touch with with are those involved with with music and who supported him in in in No 3 when he was my age Ev asked James what it was like to play such an an important role in the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II James said: “The Choir returned
from holidays on Tuesday and the the Queen died two days days days later The Choir then had 10 days days to prepare and started rehearsing
for two hours a a a a a a a a a day day – all the the pieces were part of their wide repertoire During this time the the the the BBC was setting up the the the the filming rigging so so there were periods of clamour and Windsor itself was was packed Each rehearsal needed
to to be exactly to to the the allocated time it it was was challenging for the the the choristers choristers not just vocally but mentally Not all all all all the the choristers choristers had seen a a a a a a a coffin before and so were assisted by staff to give them the the the support they needed” Following the service James received lovely messages from many whose loved ones had died during the the COVID-19 pandemic and and who were moved by the the music We asked James what he he had learned at at at Malvern Malvern that helped during this time time and he he believes Malvern Malvern Malvern gave him great time time management and teamwork skills “Malvern left us with feelings that we we know what we we are doing” he explained Malvern Malvern taught him a a a a a a a a a a a a lot about independence a a a a a a a a a a a a a a Malvern Malvern Malvern quality that is still in in the hearts of all Malvernians today It was a a a a a a a a pleasure and and inspiration to interview James and and we all wish him the the best of luck for the future “Malvern left us with feelings that we we know what we we are doing” he explained Malvern taught him a a a a a a lot about independence a a a a a a a Malvern quality that is still in in the hearts of all Malvernians today James Vivian Ev Kenrick (EH 18-23) Harry Graydon (1 18-23) James Vivian (3 90-92)
