In particular the Northern Meeting where we celebrated our 70th year at Formby GC and the Society presented a fine bench seat to Formby GC in recognition of our long- established and strong friendship. Our sincere appreciation to His Honour Tony Ensor who has run this ever-popular meeting for 45 years.
In 2019, for the first time a dinner was held in Esher prior to the Spring Meeting and was well attended, particularly by many members who travelled from further afield and spent the afternoon playing at Sunningdale GC. These dinners are optional and are increasing in popularity, especially for those members traveling from further afield.
The Arnell Bowl is a knock-out match play (full handicap) competition played with Repton. In the early rounds it is a regional knock-out tournament (to avoid travelling too far) and last year attracted an entry of over 45. The semi- final and final are played at Sunningdale. This year the semi-finals included one OM and three from Repton. It was one of our own, Guy Davis, who prevailed in the final at Sunningdale GC. For the unlucky first round losers all is not lost, as the President’s Tankard (presented by David Pepper, Old Reptonian) awaits. The finals are held at Little Aston where Jon Horton won the Tankard in the final against Duncan Christie-Miller.
The Society continues to be in good health with a membership of over 300 and we welcomed 17 new members during the year. Sadly we also lost some old friends, including past Captain and President, Robin Humphreys, Veterans’ Captain Robin Erskine and Derek Collins.
The Society cannot succeed without the time, support and commitment of its member; it was evident this year that we are fortunate to have such an engaged and interested
membership. In particular we must thank all our match managers who sadly have to spend too much time calling around at the last minute to replace the (inevitable?) last minute drop outs. The Society also wishes to thank Paul Godsland (Malvernian Society), John Cox (Master of Golf at the College) and the Headmaster for their support of the Society, and attendance at many events, over the last year.
Last but not least, we must thank Jeremy Lowe who is the embodiment of the Society. His passion for golf and Malvern is absolute. There is no greater supporter of the Society, be it our finest scratch players to our high handicap golfers who more often than not can be found scratching about in the rough. Jeremy has had a new hip this year and despite the odd setback (a slip down a set of stairs) he is back in rude health and plans to resume playing golf in the spring. Our Honorary Treasurer, Chris Boyd, when not managing his own business or sitting on Committee of the Malvernian Society trustees, makes sure the Society remains solvent and indeed prospers financially.
Finally our Captain, Dr Mark Winter, enjoyed an excellent year. He could be found pacing around the various matches in the Halford Hewitt, played over the course where he is a recent past-Captain. He also attended many of the meetings, including the 70th Northern Meeting where he spoke fondly of his time growing up and learning to play his golf at Formby GC.
