New teachers
We also have some new teachers joining us this term. They have different and varied talents and are extremely able people:
Mrs Mair Forde has rejoined us after a year in Oxford teaching at Headington; she has a first class degree from Oxford in French and Spanish, and we welcome her back to our staff.
Miss Flora Sagers has joined us in a part-time capacity in the English Department. She is a Cambridge graduate and joins us after a year teaching at Wellington College.
Mr Andrew Wilson has joined us after teaching at Stowe School. He is an Economist and a graduate of Bristol University. Following his degree, he became an Officer in the British Army and he will, therefore, be helpful with our CCF and Duke of Edinburgh Award programmes.
Another Economist joining us is Ms Fiona Hardy, a graduate of Newcastle University, who has most recently been Head of Economics at St Dunstan’s School in London.
Miss Emily Parker is an Exeter graduate who has had an interesting career, notably as a Chartered Surveyor. She has been living in Hong Kong recently and will bolster our Geography Department.
Ms Sebnem Melan is our German Language Assistant for the year.
I am delighted to have such bright and enthusiastic staff joining our ranks this year and I am sure that you will enjoy getting to know them.
Staff changes
Mr Michael Haynes, Head of Academic Music, has been ill recently and is expected to take early retirement. This is an extremely difficult time for him as he was so fulfilled and respected within our Music Department.
Mr Adam Wharton, Housemaster of No.1, is Acting Chaplain for this term as Father Andrew Law has stepped down as Chaplain as part of his movement to our part-time staff; Reverend David Ibbotson, currently Chaplain at Eastbourne School, will be joining us in January as Chaplain.
Examination results
Looking back over the Summer, our academic results were generally very good and particularly strong at the top end. As many parents will know and as is the case for well over 50% of the HMC schools, we do not enter league tables (and the rationale for this is explained on our website), but we do celebrate the achievements of our top pupils and publish our results subject by subject on the website. Here is a brief analysis of our public examinations:
Our IB candidates were really pleased with their results and two pupils, Liza Rozenberg and Efe Erciyaz achieved a full house of 45 points, with Annika Schulz and Andreas Heyer achieving 44. About 30% of the cohort achieved the magical 40 or more points.
At A level, Miranda Bruce was, perhaps, the most outstanding candidate with three A*s and, overall, the cohort performed 6% better than our expectations in the terms of the A*-B outcomes.
Over thirty of our pupils achieved 6 A*s or more at GCSE level and 25% of the entries gained a 9 or equivalent – a most impressive performance.
As mentioned above, after re-marks, the results will be placed by subject on the website.
As in the past, the vast majority of our candidates were able to get into the university of their choice and some were able to ‘trade-up’ to slightly higher profile universities as their results were better than expected.
Mr John McCarry
On a sad note, a teacher who retired from Malvern in Summer 2017, recently died. Mr John McCarry taught English at Malvern for ten years. He contracted aggressive cancer over the summer which, regrettably,
led to his death a fortnight before the start of term. His wife, Dorothy McCarry, remains with us a teacher in the English Department.
