ABBERLEY ADVENTURES 5 Charities
We have chosen two charities to support this year. UNHCR, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, works to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people. They are ‘on the ground’ providing life-saving support, shelter and protection. As temperatures drop, many displaced families will face another brutal winter far from home and they need our support.
SARA, Severn Area Rescue Association, is an independent, marine and land-based, search and rescue organisation covering the Severn Estuary and upper reaches of the River Severn. SARA is the largest independent lifeboat service in the UK, second only to the RNLI, with 22 operational inshore lifeboats, 20 vehicles and approximately 200 personnel.
We have supported our school charities this term through collections at our carol services, selling mistletoe and Abberley apple juice at our Christmas Fair and through the very popular Abberley Hall Clay Pigeon Shoot.
We also sold poppies for the British legion, took food donations from the Harvest Festival to the Worcester Food Bank and we took part in Operation Christmas Child, donating a good number of shoe boxes full of gifts to children in poverty throughout the world. We will be having more fundraising events next term so please watch this space.
Boarding
Our boarders coped with the challenges of our Covid outbreak brilliantly. Since our return to normality, if such a thing exists, we have tried to have as much fun as possible in the house. Mostly, this has taken the form of fabulous weekend activities, an advent calendar of upstairs fun and the Christmas Party. We enjoyed a wonderful Bonfire Party with spectacular fireworks, a weekend shopping trip to Worcester, Christmas Crafting, Drive Through Carols (in the snow), a Christmas Lip Sync Competition and an Ice-Skating trip to Malvern Ice Quest. These activities are all part of the experience of being a Full-Boarder at Abberley but Part-Time and Weekly boarders are also welcome to join us when they want to as are day children.
The Christmas Party was a highlight with 97 children boarding for the night and attending the party. The children enjoyed Rodeo Reindeer, Snowboarding Simulator, Reindeer Antler Hoopla, Nerf Target Shooting, Father C’s Casino, Snowball Fighting, Tin Can Alley, Nutcracker Hoopla, Beat The Bleep, Xmas Character Racing and DJ Snowman’s Disco. It was such a fun night and wonderful to have all our dorms filled to bursting point. Thank you so much to parents and children for agreeing to participate in this boarding event and we look forward to more occasions like this in the future.
If anyone is interested in boarding at Abberley, from one night a week to Weekly or Full-Boarding then please do not hesitate to get in touch with Toby Dunham on toby.dunham@abberleyhall.co.uk
During the Spring Term, our weekend activities programme will be as follows:
» Saturday 8th January – New Year Disco
Sunday 9th January – The Abberley Indoor Golf Contest
The New Year Disco will feature a fake countdown to midnight – a chance to relive the magic of New Year’s Eve once again (only not so late!). On Sunday, the children will be in groups to design and build one hole for a crazy golf course and then they will all have to complete the entire 9-hole course. Who will be the winning team?
» Saturday 15th January – Ready Player One Nerf Wars Sunday 16th January – Gamewagon
Saturday night will feature a Nerf War in the Sports Hall – loud electronic music, plenty of references to 80’s video games and a fun, safe, nerf-focused evening. On Sunday we will welcome the Gamewagon (delayed from the Autumn Term) with video games galore for the children to enjoy.
» Saturday 29th January – A Chinese New Year Feast
Sunday 30th January – Chinese Crafting and Indoor Archery
Chinese New Year comes to Abberley with a fantastic Chinese feast cooked by our chefs followed by an opportunity to build a dragon and complete some Chinese Crafting tasks on Sunday and take on the indoor Archery challenge.
