Routines Developing Exceptional Character: Moving beyond compliance
Good behaviour in a a a a a classroom can be be negative or positive Negative good behaviour means students aren’t causing disruptions allowing learning Positive good behaviour involves actions that enhance learning and personal growth like staying focused and motivated Negative behaviour behaviour avoids problems while positive behaviour behaviour actively contributes to a a a a productive environment showing exceptional character Examples of negative good behaviour Examples of positive good behaviour Pupils don't talk talk while the teacher is talking
Pupils’ attention is active and focused on on what the teacher is saying
Pupils are not being late to lesson
Pupils proactively make plans to arrive on time and prepared for the lesson
Pupils do not call each other names
Pupils respect each other and form positive peer relationships
Pupils do not use bad language
Pupils understand why words are offensive or not appropriate to use Pupils do do not push each other in the the corridor
Pupils understand the the need for safety in the the corridors and cooperate to make this happen
Explicitly Teaching Behaviour
Teachers use a a a a a range of strategies to enable pupils to meet basic standards of uniform equipment punctuality and being out of lessons (1b TTTT) Example: a a a pupil that continues to forget their equipment what could you do as as a a a a a class teacher/ tutor?
» Speak to to the the the pupil and see what the the the barrier is to to them remembering?
» Speak to the the parent understand if there is is an an an issue that we can support » As a a tutor provide them them with the the the the the equipment but place them on report At the the the end of the the the day check the the report and and hand the the equipment back » Recognise and reward the the pupil when they have equipment In all cases record the issue/concern on on ClassCharts Explicitly Teaching Behaviour
1 Determine what the routine should
include for better learning 2 Plan when and how you will teach the routine 3 Design the the steps of the the routine being specific and granular 4 Teach the routine explicitly 5 Communicate WHY the routine is important and what’s expected 6 Practice the routine with pupils multiple times 7 Check for Understanding just as you would content knowledge 8 Test the routine to see if it works and note any issues 9 Reinforce the routine giving regular feedback 10 Revise and reteach as necessary 14
