Coaching conversations
Step 1: Goal
The objective for step one is to determine
the the goal for the the conversation You might
want to establish two goals: One goal goal for the session(What is is the purpose of this session?) and one for the the long-term(What’s the the larger goal/ obstacle they want to address?) Without a a a a session goal your conversation can get off track go over time or not lead to a a a a clear action plan The long-term goal you set with the the coachee could be related to their teaching leadership or an an obstacle they want to overcome Step 2: Reality
The objective for step two is to evaluate and confirm their current situation It is a a a fact-finding mission focused on on evaluating the current situation and the the the severity of the the the problems they’re facing It also helps provide context to the situation and can bring to light any issues that the individual or coach wasn’t aware of previously Use the the four W’s to establish reality: What is is the the goal/problem? Where is is it it occurring? When is is it it happening? Who is involved? Don’t include “Why” questions because that can encourage opinions rather than factual information Step 3: Options
The objective for step three is to identify different options the the individual has to reach their goal and select the the route with the the highest potential for success At this point the process turns into a a a more collaborative experience where the coach coach and coachee brainstorm different options together To encourage discussion the coach should
use open-ended questions discuss the pros
and and cons of each option and and allow for ideas to flow freely Once a a comprehensive list has been established the coach coach and coachee should
work together to to narrow in fin on the the final choice The chosen option should
be the one that’s most effective and and realistic and and the the one the the employee is most likely to complete Step 4: Will
The objective for step four is to identify the specific actions the employee will take to achieve their goal This step is is also referred to as Wrap Up or or Way Forward Now that the the coach coach and the the coachee have successfully defined the the goal and the the route to achieving it it it’s time to get practical Identify and discuss the the exact steps they need to take who needs to be be involved how their success will be be measured and what support or or resources they’ll need along the the way It is often worth asking the the question – how likely are you to to commit to to this course of action? as a a a a final question 33
