A Tribute to Philly Hunt
Philly was an artist from an early age with her skills being developed, initially at The Elms, then at Malvern College. She went on to study at the London College of Communication and soon had her own studio in Peckham. She majored on print-making but incorporating expression of her strong principles of sustainability and support of the marginalised sections of society. The written word was often used in her art with slogans and prose to support her beliefs.
Moving back to Herefordshire after six years in London, she continued her art but also was involved in local groups working in sustainability and the outdoors, in particular The Colwall Orchard Group and Transition Malvern Hills. Working in the ODD shop in Ledbury, she developed skills in upcycling of furniture and clothing.
In her own words on her blog ‘My work focuses on the power of imagination to permit emotional and social well-being and connect us to environmental awareness and issues surrounding climate activism. I paint, sew, print, draw, dye, use drills and nails and hammers to make things to go in homes, and I write a LOT; essays, songs, articles and currently a film script.’
As a memorial to Philly, her friends and art teachers from The Elms & Malvern College curated an exhibition of her work in April. It is hoped that her work will be shown in another exhibition at h-Art in September 2020. A tree has been planted in the Nine-Acre field in memory of Philly.
