CLUB EVENTS UPDATE
RAF Odiham, Odiham, Hampshire RG29 1QT
Thursday 24th – Saturday 26th July 2025
Okay so I alluded to some challenges at the pub on the Clubs annual trip to RAF Odiham in Membership Matters. Here I'll go into a little bit more detail as it did involve Nicky, my wife, and I as well as Nick our Editor who I thought might want to tell the story. Given that he is working to a deadline putting this issue together here's my version.
Nicky and I arrived at the Four Horseshoes mid-afternoon. This was the first time we had attended this event and whilst the pub looked as though it had seen better days the grassy area across the road where we all set up camp was more than adequate. Nick had told us that he was hoping to join us at 4pm which came and went and then we received a distress call. He had an issue with his fan belt 8 miles away. Now I wouldn't presume to know more than Nick when it comes to type 2's particularly the type 1 1600cc engine. But he needed help so we dropped the pop top and were one our way. Luckily, whilst the sun was well over the yardarm we hadn't had a dram!
When we found him, Poppy the bay was up on the verge and Nick was struggling to get any tension on the fan belt. The
top pulley wasn't tightening up right and binding on the alternator. After some head scratching it was out with the tow rope and we coupled him up to the back of Olly our '73 bay hoping the rope wouldn't foul on our towbar mounted bike rack. It was quite a harrowing journey and the rope did come off halfway round a roundabout but we made it back to the pub.
By the time we got there everyone else was feeding their faces so we thought we better tuck in before it all went. We needn't have worried; there was plenty to go around.
The next morning before leaving in convoy for the RAF Odiham family day it was determine that the spacer between the top pulley and alternator was worn and needed replacing. Just Kampers is literally just down the road and Nick managed to get them to drop the required parts off later that day!
As far as the show was concerned it was epic. There was something in the air virtually every minute of the day, the only lull being for an hour at lunch time. At one point I counted 8 Chinooks in the air at the same
