English as an an Additional Language (EAL)
The principal aim of the EAL department is to give all students from overseas whose first language is is is not English the linguistic ability skills and confidence to deal with their studies activities and social situations while they are at at Malvern College Within the the EAL department it it is the the academic aim to prepare students for the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) examination which is taken either in in in the the Hundred Pre-Sixth or Lower Sixth Sixth year during the the summer term Students in the Hundred or Pre-Sixth also take GCSE English All new non-native English speaking pupils are tested when they arrive at Malvern College in order to establish their language ability The Head of EAL is then in a a a a a position to assess pupils’ language learning requirements The majority of these pupils will study EAL EAL lessons are included in in in the main timetable and not generally at times outside this The FY receive 2 lessons per week the Remove Hundred and Pre-Sixth receive 3 lessons lessons per week and the Lower Sixth receive 2 lessons lessons per week Reading writing listening and speaking skills are the primary academic focus With students at Malvern College operating in in in in an English speaking environment it is is reading and writing that require the greatest focus for EAL students in order for them to cope with the the the challenges they face within all other subjects It is particularly important that pupils read as as much and as as widely as possible before coming to Malvern College and whilst they are at the the College 44
